SchoolPinnd Privacy Policy
Last Updated: January 2nd, 2018
Welcome to SchoolPinnd!
1) What is this document?
This privacy policy describes our privacy practices, including how and when we handle the member and visitor information collected and created through your use of SchoolPinnd.
This policy is a part of the SchoolPinnd Terms of Service, and it controls over any conflicts with that agreement. By visiting, joining, or using SchoolPinnd, or otherwise indicating that you agree to this policy, you consent to and authorize our using your personal information as described in this policy. If you don’t consent to us using your information as described, please stop using SchoolPinnd and, if you are a member, delete your account. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
2) Who or what is SchoolPinnd?
SchoolPinnd is a private social network and online platform for persons residing in and/or with a child or children in a specific school district and/or persons in and/or with a child or children in a specific school. We use “SchoolPinnd” here to refer to the SchoolPinnd.com website and/or any mobile apps and/or any other apps (also referred to as our “Services”) that provide you with access to that platform. We also use “SchoolPinnd” to refer to the companies operating our Services. When this policy mentions “we” or “us,” it refers to the controller of your information under this policy.
If you live in the United States, the Services and your information are operated, controlled, and provided to you by SchoolPinnd, LLC.
3) What are SchoolPinnd’s rules and expectations about member privacy and information?
SchoolPinnd has clear ground rules and expectations about member information and privacy:
a) Don’t share your or any other person’s information or non-public Content without his/her permission.
i. SchoolPinnd believes strongly that School members should be able to communicate privately amongst themselves – this is why we restrict who can access your School.
ii. If you take information or Content shared by one member to another member and share it outside the School without his/her permission, you are violating other members’ expectations; that behavior is a breach of the trust and community we strive to provide at SchoolPinnd.
b) Don’t share your personal account with someone else.
i. It’s important to SchoolPinnd that members be who they say they are. If you share your account, it’s not clear who is behind your name. (We make an exception for businesses, news organizations, and/or other similar specialized accounts, since these entities may need to authorize more than one person to manage its account.)
c) Do not gather information from SchoolPinnd, either manually or using automation (such as through scripts, robots, crawlers or spiders).
d) We know that you do not want spam or marketing phone calls from third parties, so we will never sell or rent your personal information to third parties. We won’t share it with a third party unless we have your authorization. Similarly, you are not permitted to give, sell, rent, or otherwise share any other person’s or member’s information from SchoolPinnd to third parties.
Violating any of the above or other aspects of the SchoolPinnd Terms of Service may lead to a loss of account privileges, potentially including a permanent ban from SchoolPinnd.
4) What information does SchoolPinnd collect, and how?
a) We collect information from you, when you give it to us directly or give us the OK to get it from another source.
i) For example, when you register for SchoolPinnd, you voluntarily provide your name, profile photo, email address, and similar information.
ii) Another example of a way that you might provide SchoolPinnd with information is if you decide to invite new members to join SchoolPinnd. You might share their email address with us, or share your contacts with us, we might send an invitation and follow-up reminders on your behalf.
iii) If you decide to upload and sync your email address book so that we can help you find and connect with users you know or help other users find and connect with you, we may later use this information to make suggestions for you and other users based on those imported contacts. You can delete your imported address book contacts at any time by managing your setting page.
iv) If you want to join SchoolPinnd but we don’t yet have service for your School, you might give us your contact information and ask us to notify you when we do.
v) If you want to suggest a local business, you might share information about it.
vi) If you want to help other School members and SchoolPinnd get to know you better, you may share information about yourself in your profile — your interests, skills, or even what you love about your School.
vii) If you want to communicate with other School members and share Content (as defined in our Terms of Service), you might post or upload something on SchoolPinnd.
viii) If you contact us with a support request, question, or comments, you may provide us with your contact information and a description of the issue so we can respond.
b) We collect information from your browser, computer, or mobile device, which provide us with technical information when you use SchoolPinnd as a visitor or member.
i) SchoolPinnd automatically collects technical information created when you visit or use SchoolPinnd or read a message from us, including:
(1) Device data, which tells us about the device you’re using, including but not limited to: what type and model it is, its operating system and version, its unique identifier, crash data (if applicable), and what settings you’ve enabled. Your device and software settings affect what information your device makes available to us.
(2) Log data, which is automatically recorded by our servers based on data sent by your app or browser. This typically includes the date and time you visited, the browser or app version you used (and its settings), the URLs you came from and go to, your IP address and protocol, and how you used SchoolPinnd (for example, which links you clicked on).
(3) Cookie data, which comes from “cookies” (small data files stored on your computer or mobile device) and similar technologies. Cookie data helps us recognize you, remember your preferences, and learn more about you; some, but not all, cookie data is associated with your SchoolPinnd account. You can configure your browser to disable or reject cookies, but SchoolPinnd Services may not function properly if you disable or reject cookies.
c) We may collect information from various vendors. For example, we may obtain map information from mapping companies.
d) We collect information from public sources, such as census data, state and/or national education websites and street addresses. This helps us understand our members and potential areas for expansion.
5) How does SchoolPinnd use the information it collects?
a) We use information to identify and invite potential new members, and to set up for use in or by new Schools.
i) If you decide to invite new members to join SchoolPinnd, you might share their residential or email address with us, or share your contacts (or social-media friends list) with us, so we can send an invitation and reminders on your behalf.
ii) We use public sources to help identify potential new members.
iii) If you ask SchoolPinnd to notify you when we start offering service to your School/District, we keep your request until your School is established, and then use it to notify you as requested and to help verify you as a resident.
b) We use information to get you started on SchoolPinnd:
i) SchoolPinnd may verify that you live within a certain School/District, including manual verification by the member who invited you or by a Lead.
ii) Once you register, your personal information is used to populate your profile.
c) We use information to operate SchoolPinnd and to improve our products and features:
i) To help you publish Content and view and respond to Content from other members, based on your settings and posting selections;
ii) To highlight popular topics or resources;
iii) To understand the aggregate demographics of the members and Schools we serve;
iv) To respond to your support questions, concerns, requests, and comments;
v) To test and evaluate potential new products and features on SchoolPinnd; and
vi) To diagnose and resolve problems, analyze trends, and monitor aggregate usage and resource needs.
d) We may share or disclose your information at your direction.
i) If you authorize a third-party website, web client, or application to access your account, or if you direct us to share your feedback to a business or government entity, we may share or disclose relevant information.
6) What choices do you have?
a) You have choices about sharing your profile information:
i) You decide how much personal information (such as the street number of your home address) to share in your personal profile by using your profile settings.
ii) If you want to share information about your family in your profile, such as photos, please ensure you have their permission.
b) You have choices about invitations and reminders:
i) If you ask us to notify you when we start offering service to your School, we keep your request until your School is established, and then use it to notify you as requested and send you updates. If you change your mind about wanting to be notified, contact us.
c) You have choices about whether, how, and with whom you share Content:
i) You can share Content with other SchoolPinnd members, such as private messages to another member or a post shared with your School/District.
ii) Some types of Content may be shared more widely across SchoolPinnd or as “public,” meaning accessible to search engines and non-members. Use your settings and the selections available when you post Content to control visibility.
iii) Replies in a conversation are visible to the same SchoolPinnd School/District as the original post that started the conversational thread.
iv) You can edit your posted Content or delete it from SchoolPinnd as long as your account is active, with the limited exceptions including but not limited to:
(1) Private messages from you to a specific member or members cannot be individually deleted, whether from your side or from the inbox of the recipient(s);
(2) If you’ve shared Content with a group, you cannot remove it from the group recipients;
(3) If you’ve moved or otherwise changed School, you cannot delete any Content you shared in your previous School, but we can delete it for you (please contact SchoolPinnd for assistance); and
(4) Deleting a post will result in removal of all replies to that post too.
v) If you believe that an item of de-identified or aggregated public Content visible to non-members is yours and do not wish it to be publicly visible, contact SchoolPinnd.
d) You have choices about the emails and notifications we send you:
i) You can manage your email and notification preferences on your settings page. By default, you are signed up for agency broadcast emails applicable to your School/District; you can change this in your settings. Certain member-related administrative emails cannot be turned off; the only way to end those is to delete or deactivate your SchoolPinnd account.
e) If you granted SchoolPinnd access to geolocation information from your mobile device, you can revoke that grant at any time by changing the settings on your mobile device.
f) You may choose to move/change your account to a new School in your District, or to deactivate or delete your account:
i) If you move or otherwise change School, and indicate through your account settings that you have moved, some of your personal profile (such as name, photo, interests, responses to your invitations, phone and email contact) will migrate to the new School. Once approved, you will no longer be a member of your previous School and cannot edit or delete Content you posted there.
g) You can deactivate your account through your account settings, with immediate effect. To reactivate, please log back in to SchoolPinnd and indicate that you wish to reactivate. If your account is deactivated for a long time, we might contact you to know if you want to delete it or reactivate.
i) Account deactivation ends access to posts and other activity; you will no longer appear in your School’s directory. You can still sign-in and see your limited profile and reactivate. We may send you SchoolPinnd email newsletters unless you wish to unsubscribe.
ii) Content you shared before deactivating will remain in your School, attributed to a limited member profile with your name and photo, except for any individual Content items you deleted before you deactivated your account.
h) You can delete your account or to request deletion of your account, please contact us at info@schoolpinnd.com. Account deletion cannot be undone.
i) Account deletion ends all email notifications; you will no longer appear in your School directory. We may send you SchoolPinnd email newsletters unless you wish to unsubscribe.
ii) Account deletion deletes all of your previously posted Content and all data relevant to you except that: (a) private messages may remain visible to the recipient(s) but may be attributed without your identity (e.g., “A Member”); and (b) we may retain account records to the extent we believe necessary for legal, safety, or other legitimate reasons.
iii) Because deletion removes your account information from our systems, you may in the future receive new invitations to join SchoolPinnd.
7) How does SchoolPinnd share information about me with third parties?
SchoolPinnd is a platform for School community members to share helpful information with each other. To that end, we make the Content you post on SchoolPinnd, such as posts, replies, messages, and profile information, available to other SchoolPinnd members based on the preferences in your settings, the preferences on the Content you provide, and as described in this policy.
SchoolPinnd knows that you do not want spam or marketing calls from third parties, so we will never sell or rent your personal information to third parties, and we will not share it with a third party unless we have your authorization.
We use Stripe for payment, analytics, and other business services. Stripe collects identifying information about the devices that connect to its services. Stripe uses this information to operate and improve the services it provides to us, including for fraud detection. You can learn more about Stripe and read its privacy policy at https://stripe.com/privacy.
Our systems are not currently configured to accept browsers’ “Do Not Track” signals, as no industry-wide standard for handling them has been adopted.
We may also share aggregated or de-identified information with companies we do business with, as well as government agency members or other organizational members.
In limited circumstances, SchoolPinnd may make snippets of Content available, without your name or other identifying information, to the public (meaning non-members and search engines).
We may share your personal information with third-party service providers doing work for us, subject to obligations consistent with this Privacy Policy and any other appropriate confidentiality and security measures, and on the condition that the third parties use your private personal data only on our behalf and pursuant to our instructions. These third parties are contractually required to use it only to provide their service to us, and contractually barred from using it for their own purposes.
FOIA/Sunshine Laws. Posts by government agency accounts, and your replies to those posts, may be subject to laws mandating public access to government records (such as the Freedom of Information Act/FOIA or state "sunshine" or “right-to-know” laws).
Legal and Safety Reasons. We may retain, preserve, disclose or share your personal information if we believe that it is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation, legal process, law enforcement, or governmental request; to protect the safety of any person; to address fraud, security, or technical issues; or to protect SchoolPinnd’s and our users’ rights or property. However, nothing in this Privacy Policy is intended to limit any legal defenses or objections that you may have to a third party’s, including a government’s, request to disclose your information.
8) What else should you understand about your information and SchoolPinnd?
a) Data Retention. We may retain your information in our server logs, our databases and our records for as long as necessary in light of the purposes set out in our Terms of Service and this privacy policy, subject to any legal obligations to further retain such information.
b) Account Security. SchoolPinnd uses technical and organizational measures intended to keep your data secure, including using https on our web pages to reduce the risk of unauthorized interception of your communications during your visits to the website. However, the internet is not a fully secure environment and we cannot guarantee that your personal information won’t be intercepted or improperly accessed. Please ensure that you keep your password safe and do not share it with anyone.
c) Accessing Your Information. You can access much of your SchoolPinnd information by logging into your SchoolPinnd account. If you live in the United States, the Services are operated and provided to you by SchoolPinnd, LLC.
d) Other Services and Websites. In using SchoolPinnd, you may come across links to websites and services operated by third parties (for example, if a member shares a link to a video on YouTube or SchoolPinnd shares a link to an informational website). These third parties have their own privacy policies, which will apply to your activity if you click on the link and access their website or service. We do not accept any responsibility or liability for such external sites’ privacy and security practices.
e) Amendment. From time to time we may make changes to this privacy policy. The most current version of the policy will govern our use of your information and will be located at www.schoolpinnd.com/privacy. If we make a change to the Privacy Policy that, in our sole discretion, is material, we will take steps to notify you in advance of the change (for example by emailing you or by posting a notice when you login to your account). If you continue to access or use SchoolPinnd after the date any revised privacy policy comes into force, you will be bound to the revised privacy policy.
